Social activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk entered the 20th day of his indefinite hunger strike on Friday, with growing concern over his deteriorating health and increasing calls for the Centre to engage in dialogue over his demands.
Wangchuk has been fasting at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi since June 28 in protest over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination process. His protest has drawn nationwide attention, with students, civil society groups, political leaders and public figures expressing support while urging the government to initiate discussions.
Delhi High Court Orders Regular Health Monitoring
As concerns over his health intensified, the Delhi High Court directed authorities to ensure Wangchuk undergoes regular medical examinations. The court emphasized that the life of every citizen is precious and instructed the Centre and Delhi government to intervene medically if doctors determine that his condition becomes critical.
According to reports presented before the court, Wangchuk has lost around 9 kilograms since beginning the fast, although doctors have stated that he remains mentally alert while requiring continuous medical supervision.
Support Continues to Grow
Support for Wangchuk’s protest has expanded beyond student groups.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah appealed for greater compassion and urged the government to engage with the activist. Meanwhile, several members of the film fraternity, including actor Atul Kulkarni and actor Sonakshi Sinha, have publicly backed Wangchuk and called for dialogue before his health worsens.
Parliament March Planned
Organisers have announced a march to Parliament on July 20, aiming to press for action on the issues raised during the protest. Supporters have also organised solidarity hunger strikes, reflecting growing public participation in the movement.
